I went to Yilan a few weeks ago and finally visited the Lanyang Museum, which I had passed by many times without entering. Both the museum campus and the architecture are beautiful. The permanent exhibition features the composition of mountains, sea, and plains, the essence of Yilan — and also the essence of Taiwan’s history. My favorite exhibit is a bookshelf dedicated to maritime literature, which contains many unexpected books.
The most impressive part for me, however, was the sighting of a gray-streaked flycatcher. At that moment, I was not certain what the bird was (as it was a lifer for me), but its appearance reminded me of the dark-sided flycatcher that stopped by the Taipei Botanical Garden last October, both being flycatchers. I confirmed that what I saw this time was indeed a gray-streaked flycatcher after consulting the field guide. The accumulation of knowledge and unexpected encounters are perhaps the greatest pleasures of birding.
As the end of the year draws near, so do the much-looked-forward-to Tamsui River Bird Count and Taiwan New Year Bird Count. See you there in December!
And here are two more recent events:
I plan to visit the New Taipei City Art Museum for Taiwan Design Expo this Saturday (which runs only until October 22). In addition to the fun personality test, the newly opened New Taipei City Art Museum seems interesting.
Also, I will go to the Civil Defense Disaster Preparation Fair held by Kuma Academy on November 18. Come and join us!
