Though I had planned to restart publishing at the end of October, recently there are so many interesting bird watching events I’d like to share, so I decided to publish this simple piece, and take a rest next time. The publication will resume on November 9. And I’d like to say hi and thanks to new subscribers!

Global Big Day
Last Saturday (October 8) was the October Big Day. On this day, people from all over the world would go birding and upload the records to the eBird platform. Although the event was held online, there was a strong sense of community for participating in the event. According to the statistics so far, Taiwan has uploaded 920 lists and recorded 275 species of birds, temporarily ranking 15th (ranking by the number of lists) among all countries. I wonder if there will be more lists uploaded before the official deadline for uploading (October 12)?
I had lunch with some old friends last Saturday, a lovely coincidence. So after the meal, I dragged everyone to the Da’an Forest Park for a walk and bird watching. I was very happy to have participated in this grand event together with my friends.
There are (presumably) two Global Big Days in a year, one in the first half of the year (May 14th this year, and I went to Wulai for birding that day), and the other in the second half of the year. Let’s join the Big Day next year!
Bird Census of Tamsui River
The Big Day is over, but every day is a good day for birding, and there will be several wonderful birding events by the end of the year.
I mentioned the series activities of synchronized bird census of Tamsui River in spring before, and now the winter census is coming! I will join in the birding tour to the Shezidao (社子島) Wetland on October 22 and the synchronized census at the Lujiao River Manmade Wetland (鹿角溪人工溼地) on the morning of December 10. Please join us!
“Fair Feathers: Images and Stamps” in the Postal Museum
In addition, I would like to share about the special exhibition of “Fair Feathers: Images and Stamps” (翩翩飛羽: 映像.郵票特展)1 in the Postal Museum. The exhibition is well-organized, including bird information, original paintings of bird stamps, as well as scientific drawings and flower and bird paintings that combine science and art.
I have never been to the Postal Museum before. I happened to visit this exhibition last week and found it very interesting. The admission fee only costs NTD 30. The special exhibition will last until this Sunday (October 16). Pay a visit and drop by the botanical garden for bird watching!
